Like everything you ever knew to be cool in one perfect package.
Inside and under the original OBI band: the book on the left, the cassette on the right.
The cassette first, which visually is all about the handwritten text (it was printed like that - pretty cool, huh?) and the Japanese plastic fold packaging. A masterwork. We are not 100% sure what's on the cassette but are pretty sure it will include this: Grand Master Caz & Chris Stein – Wild Style Theme Rap.
And the book. Written, edited, assembled by Charlie Ahearn who directed the Wild Style film in 1982 that set everything off on a global scale. There was a Wild Style tour of Japan, for which this book and cassette were made to illustrate. You'll love this Japanese TV show introduction to break dancing from 1983.
And on the inside. Well you won't ever see anything better. It's been printed not laser copied but it really LOOKS LIKE IT WAS. That's becuase it's been collaged from photos and magazine tear sheets and scraps of cut and pasted paper. It is so incredibly real!
Scribble on the wall & train. Glenn O'Brien fans will appreciate the Campbell's T.V. Party Soup can. The book is just incredible. There is an American Wild Style book too but it is for the most black and white and has nothing on this full colour, image only mash-up.
There are photos here you just don't see anywhere else. And far from decaying, this book is an entropic adventure; the older it gets (40 years now!) the better it gets.
Credit where it is due. The final page. Shun Hisamatsu on Art & Design and he very likely hand wrote the mix tape style text on the cassette too. A superstar amongst superstars.
Now of course this book is frightening rare. You can see that from looking at it! One copy is all one of you will need and all we have... go get it on the red button below.
