MAKES NO SENSE / MAKES COMPLETE SENSE. THIS IS TEENAGE STYLES AND TRENDS. 1967-71. A RETROSPECT. THE BOOK
WAS PHOTOGRAPHED BY AN AMERICAN DIPLOMAT (AND COIN COLLECTOR!) AND PUBLISHED IN 1972. NOW IT
IS TREASURE IN THE COLLECTION OF LARRY
CLARK (AMONGST VERY
FEW OTHERS).
'This publication was made possible through a generous grant from Mr. Blank'. So reads the first page of this book. There is something intensely private about this privately printed edition of 300. And rare is not the half of it!
Burton Y. Berry is the photographer and author. An American diplomat and art (and coin) collector. You can read about him onthis Wikipedia page. No mention is made of this book. Really should be amended though as this is one great achievement in print.
Photographed in Greenwich Village, Venice, Beirut, Zurich and London. It is first and foremost an extraordinary fashion document. An early example of street style fashion photography. It is second and secondmost a highly charged male gay gaze photobook!
Above right is the last page and final picture in the book. The only nude. Both of these pages could have been photographed by Larry Clark, whose first bookTulsawas published a year before this in 1971. Clark didn't even know aboutTeenage Stylesuntil this year. It now appears in a list of hismajor influences.
LOVE is what it is. As Larry Clark / Supreme as every you could be in 1972. Everyone should have this book - and while that obviously isn't possible - at least we can take one step towards such a goal.
