Sandy Robertson’s White Stuff was based around his fandom for Patti Smith (the name of the zine comes from a line in Smith’s song “Ain’t It Strange”). This issue also features 1920s boho Harry Crosby (for the simple reason that “the notes enclosed with Patti’s ‘Radio Ethiopia’ show her holding Harry Crosby’s opium pipe”) , some poetry by Antonin Artaud (Patti’s favourite surrealist) and various snapshots of 1977′s musical landscape. Robertson had moved to London from Renfrew in Scotland with a burning ambition to become a music journalist, and after churning out several issues of White Stuff he got a job with rock weekly Sounds ….
