We would have bought it for the blue. Almost unphotographable aquamarine with the milk chocolate text. 1992 this was published.
Great hotel. Great drawing of a shoe. There is a definite relationship between the sketches and the places in which they were created. This has all ease of the Los Angeles sun and poolside drinks service. There are more angsty works but they tend to appear on pages with letterheads from Stuttgart, Cologne and the Grammercy Park in New York.
Art and cool graphic design. There is a Kippenberger book titled
No Drawing No Cry
published after his death in 1997 in which just the blank hotel stationary he had collected but not drawn upon is reproduced. We like that book a lot too.
Another Californian view. Titled to the bottom of the page 'Californian Lamp'. The street lamp was a motif for Kippenberger. He made them as sculptures and drew and painted them throughout his career.
Another lamppost. This one is very special. This one is hand drawn on the title page of the book and signed in 1995. Less upright than the Californian example above, it is nonetheless shining brightly. More in line with his
Street Lamp For Drunks
of 1988. Not without humour. Not without hope.
