High School Yearbooks

IT'S THE MOST FUN IDEA
BOOKS EMAIL EVER! A TOTAL DREAM COLLECTION
OF CALIFORNIAN HIGH
SCHOOL YEAR BOOKS FROM THE EIGHTIES AND NINETIES. FASHION AND STYLE? LIKE
YOU CANNOT BELIEVE!

The 1988 Yearbook of Marina High School, California. Ragnarok comes from the school's association with Norse mythology (the athletics team are 'The Vikings'). Why 'Take A Walk On The Wild Side' we have no idea! Check Wikipedia however and you will note that in 2013 a transgender student was named Marina's Homecoming Queen. That was not Senior student Jeff S. Markus by the way. Although he may have been the head model for Bart Simpson!
'Now That's What We Call Graphic Design'! You can see more of the Ragnorak album on this link. However there is one picture in the collage above we love so much we really have to show you now...
It's too good! Stone age woman and stone-washed man! And then check out Tommy Lee. We so went to the wrong school. Why didn't we get to play a zebra print drum kit in a Keith Haring goes to Africa patterned t-shirt?

Another entry for 1988. This is the fold out Graduating Seniors quadruple page from the Huntingdon Beach High School Yearbook. You are looking at a lot people with k's and z's in their names! And if they don't end with a 'y', it will be an 'ie' and if not that then just an 'i'. Our favourite of all... Kasty. Kasty!!!

There is nothing freakishly Orange County about Steve Creath's name but there is about his face and hair! He's one of about 800 extraordinary looking young people in each album. It's as if the portrait commission was started by Thomas Struth and then passed to John Currin for retouching.

This Huntingdon Beach annual is so good for these Best in Show pairings. The black on black text says 'Best Dressed'. No comment from us!

Although these two would have plenty to say about it! Brad and Jennifer are their names. What a couple. We just hope they are still 'Friends'.

Jump forward five years to the 1993 Newport Harbour High School Yearbook and just wallow in the diversity. Nuclear Disarmament, Beastie Boys, Jesus and Slayer! That's every Raf Simons collection in one photo!

What a difference a decade makes. Kelly McGillis meets Tom Hanks! Grunge meets The Gap. Kelly McGillis did actually attend a Newport High School, by the way; Tom Hanks did not - he went to Skyline in Oakland.

1997. Why that's practically yesterday! Newport Harbour High again and a world class yearbook. We can only urge you to click this link . Save for Saved by the Bell reruns it really is about the most fun you can have!
These pictures really don't need much comment. They are joint winners of our own 'Most Enjoyable' category. Skeeter Leeper wins the name game of course by some considerable margin!

And just a reminder of how good these yearbook are. There won't be a better fashion reference right now. For all the ill fitting blazers and buckets of hair gel there are many more moments of perfectly lit, perfectly casual elegance. Enquire about the Yearbooks here
