20 Anni di Vogue Italia

IT IS A STONE COLD SUPERBOOK. 20 ANNI DI
VOGUE ITALIA. THE SILVER GREY COVERS ENCASING
500 PAGES OF COOLLY CURATED BLACK AND WHITE IMAGES. PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE THAT THERE IS NO VOGUE QUITE LIKE VOGUE ITALIA.

Coolly is the word. For a book of such wonderful material it has been compiled with a great reserve. The twenty years of Vogue Italia are presented by photographer - and then in alphabetical order. It is cool as in detached and it is cool as in Joe Cool and Snoopy. Supercool!

Veruschka half dressed or half naked. South of France, 1983. The Peter Lindbergh portfolio is beyond brilliant. To the right - his dark materials - the black dress and umbrella - the gathering clouds. Good, isn't it?

Steven Meisel has now shot over 350 covers of Vogue Italia, the first of which was 1988. Here he has just eight pages and all the work is from 1984 - the last year the book covers. In the same year he shot the black and white sleeve for Madonna's Like A Virgin.

Best in show. Bruce Weber (to the left above) and Peter Lindbergh (right). Not entirely typical images for either photographer to produce but both fabulous. The Weber section - and see the rolled sweat pants and knotted sweater picture below as evidence - is far more fashion and far more about clothes than one would expect now.

The book closes out with an extraordinary 150 pages of people in Vogue (and for Vogue read 'fashion'). Artists, writers and film directors; then models followed by the photographers themselves; then editors and stylists and even PRs and photographer's agents. It is unrivalled as reference.
